No matter how good your IT systems are, or how well they are supported, a major disaster can happen. A good example would be a fire – you arrive Monday morning to find your building has burned down. What do you do next? The aim of all disaster recovery plans is to restore the company first to partial functionality and then finally to full functionality. The time to get to these two stages is the metric against which disaster recovery plans are measured. There are two aspects to disaster recovery planning; the IT infrastructure and the written plan itself. Many IT support companies simply concentrate on the written plan, whereas we look first at the infrastructure. The reason is the written plan can certainly organise the recovery, but it can only reduce the recovery time to the minimum that their IT systems will allow. If the servers and PCs will take 6 days to setup again, then the recovery will always take 6 days no matter how the plan is executed. We first change the IT infrastructure to reduce the setup time to 2-3 days, and then write the plan based.
